Over the last few years, gig workers have been steadily losing income as big gig companies used workers’ wages and incentives to increase their own profit margins. Many workers were already financially precarious, either relying on gig work to make up the bulk of their income or as a secondary job to make ends meet, when the COVID-19 crisis began this year.
Now, the pandemic is forcing gig workers to make less money than ever while risking their very lives and the lives of their families–yet companies that specialize in deliveries like UberEats, Instacart and Doordash have seen their business DOUBLE. UberEats just lowered their minimum delivery amount from $4 to $3 and stopped paying surge on double orders during the pandemic. This means that without a tip, some delivery workers are seeing earnings as low as $3 for nearly 30 mins of work. Our demands are that delivery workers should be paid TWICE what they are making now on deliveries.
